A wooden tea caddy made circa 1830–1850, during the reign of William IV and the early Victorian era.Its substantial “sarcophagus” form showcases the beautiful grain of rare rosewood, while mother-of-pearl keyhole escutcheons and rounded bun feet add an air of refinement.
Since tea was very expensive at the time, the lady of the house would lock it away for safekeeping.
The inner lid for storing two types of tea remains intact, and the accompanying key works smoothly.Although there is some fine wear to the wood from age, peeling of the inner lead foil, and fading on the underside of the lid,it also makes a practical storage box for watches or jewelry and brings a sense of understated history to any room.
